Autumn = apples here in New England. Southington, the next town over hosts a Apple Festival. There are two orchards there and others nearby. We even have an aged apple tree in our backyard–though it was pretty well demolished in the freak October nor’easter two years ago. We had two others, but one was uprooted in Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and the other came down in a winter nor-easter a few years ago. Autumn means apple picking, and apple pie, and pork with apples ‘n’ onions, and apple cider, and all sorts of wonderful things that can be done with apples.

A trip to an apple orchard for the first Honeydew apples is always a treat. Our candy store is advertising a carmel, chocolate and pecan covered Honeydew apple big enough for six . . . autumn has arrived in Wisconsin.

We had very few apples this year due to the freaky spring weather and absence of bees at the time of blossoming. Will have to wait til next year to replenish my supply of frozen applesauce.
